I have been looking into getting a joystick for a while but various new games have come out so i couldnt afford one till now. I was just wondering what the best one to get is as I have spoken to a few people and it seems like the general concensus is the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick but please let me know if there are better ones. Budget is arround £50 but I can go a little over.
Thanks in Advance.

Be a man. Screw budgets. H.O.T.A.S Warthog is the one to get.

(nah but Logitech is probably your best option at your budget)

I would go for this one instead since it uses hall sensors which are unbeatable in this price class. (Also, it's cheaper than the Logitech one.)

what I have read online is that a throtle control is virtually esential. My final question would be does the throttle act as the collect on a helicopter in arma?

+1 for the TM HOTAS X - I've been rocking mine for about 2 years now in Arma and E and it's wizard. And cheap.

The throttle control does not realistically act like a collective, unless you are planning to use the advanced flight model.
When using the default flight model I do not recommend to use the throttle, because:

Real world: Joystick throttle all the way down -> Collective 0%
Arma: Joystick throttle all the way down -> Collective -100% -> You descend with some weird imaginary descent boost instead of just gliding towards the ground and it just feels extremely odd when flying with it.

The Hotas X does not use hall sensors. Just like the Logitech joystick it uses potentiometers that use electrical resistance to calculate the position of your joystick. The T1600m uses the hall effect (it measures the changes in the magnetic field) to calculate the position of your joystick.

The advantage of hall sensors are that they allow for a much higher measurement accuracy and therefore for a much higher resolution for your joystick movement. This means that flying the aircraft feels smoother and therefore more natural.

Buying a joystick with a dedicated throttle is not worth it, unless you are planning to spend some time with proper flight simulators.

So you have a budget for the joystick but are willing to spend a lot of £ on a trackir?
Trackir is overrated unless you play games like dcs.
So if all you want is to use it in arma go for the better joystick and skip the trackir.

I personally have the x52 pro, but I don't just fly in Arma 3, which is why I wanted a better throttle. It's a reasonable stick for its price point. I'm sure there are better ones now though. The rudder shift is not great, it makes helicopter flying a bitch, so I am looking for pedals.

I also have TrackIR. I don't recommend head tracking in general. I use it infrequently, and it's more hassle than it's worth to be honest. I'd save for a full VR headset, it's going to be a lot better experience as well as have a lot more uses.

My 2 pence:

I have owned and used:
  • Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X
  • Speedlink Black Widow
  • Saitek Pro Flight X-55 Rhino

I found the Hotas X to be a bit too digital in its operation (i.e. it felt like using keys) and it seemed to have a large dead area in the centre.

The X-55 Rhino was brilliant in Flight Simulator X but I never really got on with it in ArmA.  It is also uses a lot of desk space.  It is a bit over the top for ArmA and about x5 more expensive than the other 2.

My preferred ArmA joystick is the Black Widow.  However I use the old version that you can't switch the rumble option off.  The new one is called the Black Widow XE which I believe gets round the rumble problem with the original.  It is also small enough to be stored under my desk and pulled out when needed.  The one potential drawback with the Black Widow is there is no notch at the mid point for the Collective control but after a while I just got used to it.

I also use Track IR and feel like I have had an arm cut off it I have to play with out it.  It is a little tricky to set up but having set it up I really like it.

Good luck deciding  S
