Recommendation- Remove the unnecessary TeamSpeak Chat rooms

Reason- They are a serious distraction to the public server.

Explanation- I've never ever been a fan of chatrooms on Arma groups, we are a group that focuses on the public server unlike other groups. Currently the chatrooms are a major distraction for the public server, lets face it the only real reason you join a TeamSpeak channel is to kill boredom, the fact is people are avoiding the public choosing the chatrooms instead to play other games. Admittedly this suggestion will not be popular at all but here me out, if we use our famous ship sinking analogy, If there's a ship sinking
and a load of sailors are getting drunk on the bottom deck, its going to distract the rest of the crew. I had it the other day, 5 people on the public, but 10 or so people in the chatrooms and its distracting to those who would be playing the server but arnt due to finding out the latest gossip in the chatrooms. There are some I no who will probably never join, I understand that but the focus should be bringing in the fresh and new, not holding on to an old stagnating community which is distracting our primary goal of a populated public server.

Summary- My opinion is, I've had this for years, is remove the TeamSpeak chatrooms. The TeamSpeak should be purely for Arma purposes. You have the after operation chatrooms allowing you to speak about fairy's and unicorns then. What we need is results now and radical change to get this server running again. There was an old joke we had about Emmae being the longest person in the teamspeak with the lowest game time on Arma 2, some say he's still in there. Hopefully you can see my perspective on this because we need results.

This is just my recommendation, so please shoot this idea down with no mercy because its your Arma group.

People aren't going to stop playing other games if there's no Teamspeak channels that facilitate them. Although I wasn't around in ArmA 2 days, this argument has been frequently made and every time someone just brings up: "people simply went to different teamspeak servers where they played other games." By all means, that would likely happen here, it would just be a dead teamspeak with a couple on the public instead of a busy teamspeak with a couple on the public.

The point isn't to get people to stop playing other games, its to stop distracting people who would join the server but got distracted by the mass below in the chatrooms.

I would say getting even 3 extra people on the server with no one on teamspeak would be a success. At least then we can work from that. Having a populated teamspeak doesn't get you a populated public server, its merely a distraction for those who would of joined. People are always looking to play Arma.

Clearly not, if people want to go play Arma they will, they'll ask people in the channels if they want to play and then they'll either log on or not.

Your reasoning is the wrong way around. People who sit in the "other" Teamspeak channels don't log on thinking "I'll go play some Arma!" but then end up sitting in those channels. If we were to remove these chatrooms, people would go to their new teamspeak to talk and sit around there and then log on ours if they wanted to play Arma.

Back in the day ( please excuse my use of this) Chatroom access was something that was a bonus of being a member.

Also back in the day becoming a member required more effort and commitment than it did now. Especially in regards to the public server.

Also as you ,(Kieran) were a member from a time when members were required to be active on the public server you joined the group because you enjoyed doing that.

Over the past couple of months the group has plateaued in growth hence the lowering of standards on membership to get more people in. It is up to the head of the group to decide this and the direction of the group. Blame the system not the people who use/abuse it. The group player doesn't play on the public as much anymore for various reasons ( start another thread if you want to talk about this).

The group is also undergoing a significant period of change over the next few weeks so now is not the best time to start implement rash actions such as removing all chatrooms just to increase public play.

I am not saying that some members are undeserving of their membership just that what being a TWC member isn't the same as what it used to be. Is that a good or bad thing well that is up to the community to decide in a private board.

On a separate note it is good to see you around again Kieran.

I do believe it works both ways, people getting distracted by people in the chatrooms and people joining the public from the chatrooms. In the end I'm with Rik though, I think there are more people doing the latter than the former.
People go on the public because they want to play Arma, but they may go on the teamspeak to have a chat with the lads or play other games with them. Sure the latter shouldn't really be done while an active Public Session is going on (during Prime-Time i.e. 18-22) but keep in mind that people also use the chatrooms for exactly that: chatting. I dare to say more than for playing games with others.
The TS can be a forum where people can exchange ideas and criticism about the group and I think that a third if not half of the discussion about suggestions is going on here, verbally. Now this obviously has it's shortcomings as well (turns out only the people who are there at the time will know your opinion) but overall the mere existence of these chatrooms has improved the group as a system.

Most of the individuals in the other chat rooms are on the top of the list of play time on public.

Just because I haven't been on in the last week, does not mean it's problematic. I've been here for years, you cannot expect the same people on every single night.

In the end, I'm far more inclined to not participate on the public server if I'm on another teamspeak server playing games with other twc members than our own. You cannot stop people from distracting others, without preventing people from communicating altogether outside the public server. Not very feasible.

Management have taken the ideas discussed in this thread and will be using them as we debate about the future of TWC, its ethos and the public server.
