As those of you who know me fairly well will already be aware - I'm pretty damn proud of my facial hair and I love my beard. Which is nothing at all to do with the fact that if I shave, I look like about 14 despite the fact I'm 25. But I digress...
Every year for the past 7 or 8 years , I've taken part in Movember and I've been trying to raise money and awareness for it for the last 3. Last year when I was working as a teacher, I made a good haul and I'm looking to keep that run up this year.
You may or may also not know that I've had anxiety and depression for around 5 years and continue to do so. It's not been until this year that I've actually had to seek help for it, but I'm still trying to deal with everything as much as I can by myself - no meds, as few sit-down sessions with a shrink as possible, it's all my own power that keeps me going. Other people have it worse than me, they need the help, I just need a push every so often.
A lot of people normally assume (which isn't wrong!) that the Movember movement is to raise awareness for male cancers. Whilst true, mental health problems are far more common in males than people thing, and there is a much wider range of health issues that can affect men than just prostate or testicular cancer. The Movember movement tries to raise as much money and awareness about as many of these as possible. Thankfully, I've not needed their help yet, but I know a close friend that has.
When Movember starts, I intend to make a video which explains my depression, what I've done, how I've dealt with it, how it affects me, why doing what I do is important to me and maybe some other boring shit, as well as my ritualistic annual beard removal! This video will be something I will release privately to you, the TWC community, as you lot have helped me in so many more ways than most of you realise.
To that end, I leave the design of my future face fuzz to you! Last year I went for a James Hetfield circa 1989 kind of look (without the long flowing heavy metal locks, of course!) - You guys decide what I should do this year! If I should do the same again (which, personally, I think looks quite good!) then let me know! If I should do something different - post a picture! Just remember, I've got to be able to grow and cultivate it in a month!
And no, despite the fact I was born in Germany, the Hitler-stache is most certainly a no-go. So don't ask.
By mid-October I'll put a poll up with what people have suggested and you can vote for your favourite ready for the Mo-Grow the following month. By all means, if anyone wants to join me in the cultivation of their Mo, please do so! If you want to raise some money or donate to my page which I'll link to - go for it!
