The idea of Cold War public missions has been around for eons, but lately it has been back at the forefront of discussion regarding public server movements. Specifically, I would love to see a ~1989 era public mission.
  • Brings more variety.
  • Opportunity for a British Millennial section (L85A1, LSW, LAW 80), Cold War section (L1A1, L7A2, L14A1, L2A3), but also an American section (M16A2, M249, AT4).
  • UKCW is already on public.
  • Plenty of content available for attachments; M1A1 Abrams, M60 Patton, FV4201 Chieftain, FV101 Scorpion, FV107 Scimitar, UH-60 Blackhawk, UH-1 Huey, Gazelle AH.1, Lynx AH.7, etc etc.
  • Spearpoint could be added for additional content, although it would be ~350MB extra on the repo, that most members would have anways. Specifically, SP would add the Sterling, Blowpipe, and uniforms.
  • The previous old concern was largely about lack of radios, but this would be largely fixed by the presence of the base radio, the map document, and some coordinating between section and connecting person.
  • Possibility for both IRA insurgency and regular Soviet-killing warfare.

Unless I have been living in a cave, we dont have a Lynx that I am aware of?

We do have a Puma and CW Chinook though, as well as Huey I guess?

I like the idea, but I would prefer we go all in and get rid of the Millennial aspect, as it is very similar to the 90's missions we currently have (cant remember if LAW 80 was in that era for public?).

Furthermore, I think that the initial focus should be on the more "easy" gamemodes to replicate that have the cold era type focus i.e Siege and Domination, before we move onto insurgency etc.

All in if such an implementation would not mean any crazy increases in pack size since that was one of our major concerns.

Additional concerns\propositions:
- give everyone maps (because it seems crazy to have pub without them, but debatable)
- include more vehicles with radios in them in order to make the transition easier, especially for newer or less experienced and self-sustaining players.
- browning auto 5 for breaching purposes pls

Sidenote, agree with Chaza on not involving a millenial force in this scenario for the sake of being different at the very least

'Are you feeling ok Lemon?'
'Yea, what's up?'
'I see you are in a helmet'

'Starlight, this is Fallen Star, message, over'
'Send it'
'Starlight, what the fuck was that'

I believe ~1989 is a good idea to start with for three reasons:

There are people who dislike WW2/CW operations because of the low-tech. There are folks who dislike Modern/Millennial because of the high-tech. This wouldn't turn off either from these missions, being an effective compromise.

The ~1989 period allows for flexibility regarding things like section radios/maps, cushioning public where necessary.

~1989 wouldn't necessarily be dependent on Spearpoint (though it would be better to have SP, IMO), whereas earlier periods would be dependent on it.

The main thing to differentiate a Cold War mission would be the L1A1, which is obviously no problem. The maps and radios are a somewhat larger issue however.

We have vehicle radios now, what we may be able to do is turn them into speakers, though I have no idea how. If we can do that then it eliminates the need for people to link into the vehicle radio whenever they get into a vehicle, which players would regularly forget/not know about and the leader is very rarely the first person to join the server either. This is personally my biggest blocker. I'm open to the idea of a section without a short range radio, but the lack of a long range is a tough one to get around.

The next is maps, but again this boils down to the section commander joining after all the infantry have left base. Potential fixes for this include allowing the heli pilot on with a lower playercount (since he can shadow the infantry like with baf sections currently, then come back to base when called on the LRR), or only allowing mission start with over a section's worth of players on already which would be overly aggressive. It could turn out that being the only role with a map would make the section commander role more attractive, but I highly doubt it.

To put it into perspective on the gear/mods front, here's a general idea of what we're capable of with our current public repo:

As you can see, the guy in the middle is bordering on decent but the others all have kit that's either too modern or made by CUP so has gaps and doesn't fit. The flak jacket of the guy in the middle is also CUP so it also doesn't hold up to close inspection from other angles, and it's also the wrong model (it's worth taking into consideration though that noone has noticed this on ops). Our COIN helmet is actually a russian SF helmet so the visor isn't the clear riot visor and doesn't really look great unless you use the visor-less version, which was also used but not much. We have all the 3cb berets too of course.

Since we can do a fairly ok baseline set of units, the only blockers I can think of are radios and maps. Once we work out solutions to these I'll get started on setting up a test section with some missions, then we can expand if that works, likely including spearpoint in the process.

Because putting in all the effort to only use it a tiny amount is not better

Aye, just saying that the IRL solution is to just pop the weapon off, drive on/off and re-attach, which is a 2 sec job

the softtop is the only one with the stripdown option, as you're aware

But if you look at the box in editor for the WMIK, its huge for some reason.
[TWC] Chaza 16th Apr
Yeah I think the soft tops can. WMIK should be able to if you unmount the weapon system on top IIRC
