In 2001 US forces, supported by Canada and the UK, invaded Afghanistan as part of the wider War on Terror. Since then the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has maintained a presence in Afghanistan to provide stability and security. In more recent years Britain has downsized its presence, culminating in a full withdrawal of combat troops in 2014. Within a year there was a major resurgence of Taliban activity, severely stressing the Afghan National Army. The Helmand province, a former mission region of the British ISAF contingent, has been especially hit hard. To make matters worse, on June 22 the Taliban hit the Afghan parliament in Kabul hard, threatening the nations democracy. Recent Events:
In an emergency vote, the British parliament passed a resolution on the deployment of a minor combat force to the Helmand Province to alleviate the ANA. A battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment deployed to the former Camp Bastion at Lashkar Gah together with Royal Artillery support. Part of the battalion has set up in a patrol base just north of Lashkar Gah, and has been tasked with supporting the ANA in the region. On their arrival, the situation appeared to be incredibly dire for the ANA, and rapid movements need to be made to prevent complete operational disaster in the area.
The Taliban, from their stronghold at Tottah, have openly attacked the main ANA base at Khassadar, after which contact was lost with the base. Reconnaissance reports suggest the worst. Furthermore, one of the ANA patrol bases has been besieged by the Taliban for days and begged the British troops for help. Lastly, the second largest town in the region, mainly populated by the Hazara ethnic minority, has been occupied by Taliban forces. A BBC news report highlighted the extreme cruelty employed by Taliban forces in their occupation, leading to the town being a high priority. Objectives:
1. Desperate calls for help have been received from one of the ANA patrol bases in the region. Break the Taliban's siege of the base.
