Map: Tarawa Betio, WW2 Repository. Conflict Overview:
Almost two years into the war in the Pacific, the United States has set its sights on the Mariana Islands, but due to the heavy garrison on these islands air bases are required from which to weaken the Japanese defenses. The Marshall Islands would be an excellent location for these air bases, but these are unfortunately blocked by the small Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands. The 2nd Marine Division has recently finished its R&R in New Zealand, and will now form the ground fighting force needed to take the Atoll. Recent Events:
A massive fleet will provide the shelling and air attack needed to cover the landings. Infantry will storm three beaches with armoured support; Red 1, Red 2, and Red 3. Unlike in previous landings, this one will most certainly be opposed. The Atoll is not large, and the Japanese are unlikely to want to give any ground. They will fight most tenaciously to throw our assault back into the sea. The enemy is heavily dug in; the beach is littered with obstacles, bunkers, and trenches. Objectives:
Establish a beachhead on Red 1.
Clear the defenses southwest of Red 1.
Advance towards the airfield, clearing enemy positions along the way.
Secure the airfield. Situation OPFOR:
