Conflict Overview:
On the 2 April 1982 Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands, followed by the invasion of South Georgia the next day, in an attempt to establish the sovereignty, it had claimed over them. The British government quickly assembled a task force that sailed 12,000 miles from the UK to recapture the islands and on the night of 21 May, the British landed on the beaches around San Carlos Water, on the north-western coast of East Falkland. By dawn the next day, they had established a secure beachhead from which to conduct offensive operations. From there, the plan was to capture Goose Green before turning towards Port Stanley.
Recent Events:
Located on the east side of the island's central isthmus, the settlement of Goose Green was the site of an airfield. Argentine forces were in a well-defended position, within striking distance of San Carlos Water, where the British task force had made its amphibious landings. While British intelligence had advised against a frontal assault on Goose Green, an attempt to capture the settlement and airfield was ordered following news of a possible United Nations-brokered armistice, which would have prevented British forces from recapturing the main part of East Falkland.
British Forces faced a challenging start to the battle – their men could not be flown in as most of their helicopters had been destroyed by Argentine missiles on May 25th. They set out from San Carlos Bay and walked for two days to reach Goose Green. Men from 2 Para left nearly all their equipment behind, so that it did not get in their way during the fight, taking with them only 2 days rations and basic weapons.
