Conflict Overview:After the relocation of the Palestine Liberation Organization from Jordan to Lebanon, order in Lebanon has mostly collapsed; the country is plagued by sectarian strife and civil war. The PLO terrorists control significant portions of the southern part of the country, from where they bombard Israeli villages and conduct border raids. Despite the success of Operation LITANI four years ago, in which the PLO was pushed back from the border, the situation in Lebanon remains volatile and the source of many problems. To make matters worse, Syrian forces stationed in Lebanon are protecting the PLO and attacking our Maronite Christian allies.
On June 3rd, the Israeli ambassador to the United Kingdom, Shlomo Argov, was shot in London. This has given the Israeli government the chance to execute long-planned operation PEACE FOR GALILEE.
Recent Events:While the primary part of the invasion force moves up the coastal road towards Sidon, a smaller force is to execute a naval landing north of Sidon. The overall goal is to find and destroy PLO encampments and training sites, driving them away from the coast and the border region. It is expected that at some point Syrian forces will attempt to intervene against us. The naval landing therefore serves two purposes; blocking a retreat of PLO forces as well as interdicting forward deployment of the Syrians.
During Operation LEAH Israeli forces will land near Hamrat, a PLO stronghold area. A number of PLO positions have been identified in the area and will require clearing out. Besides these camps, a clear road towards the city of Dayr Hafir must be cleared.
Objectives:Eliminate PLO positions between Hamrat and Dayr Hafir.
