In June 1960, Congo gained independence from Belgium after more than 50 years of colonial rule. Minimal preparations had been made and many issues, such as federalism, tribalism, and ethnic nationalism, remained unresolved. In the first week of July, a mutiny broke out in the army and violence erupted between black and white civilians. Belgium sent troops to protect fleeing whites.
Amid continuing unrest and violence, the United Nations deployed peacekeepers, but UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld refused to use these troops to help the central government in Léopoldville fight the secessionists.
The Shinkolobwe mine in near the town of Cruzar (Known to the UN as Jadotville) Katanga was described by a 1943 Manhattan Project intelligence report as the most important deposit of uranium yet discovered in the world. The uranium from this mine was used to build the atomic bombs used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. This has led to great interest in the area by both the USA and Soviet Union. This town was previously garrisoned by Swedish Troops but they have since been redeployed to the South.Recent Events:
Following a botched operation by Indian UN Peacekeepers, secessionists have taken the opportunity to retaliate directly against UN forces. In the early hours of this morning, a plane carrying Hammarskjöld was shot down. TWC Platoon from the Irish Army is to be deployed to secure the crash site and search for any intel. It is feared that the enemy will attempt to secure Cruzar and it’s uranium mine. Objectives:
