Operation IOLANTHE

By: [TWC] The_Spine

Era: Early WW2
Forcetype: Motorised Infantry
Vehicles: Universal Carrier
Attachment: Valentine Tank

Operation Start: 25/08/1941 09:30
Current Weather: Clear

Conflict Overview:
In 1925, after years of civil war, turmoil and foreign intervention, Iran became unified under the rule of Reza Khan, who crowned himself as Reza Shah that same year.

Leading up to 1939, The British began to accuse Iran of supporting Nazism and of being pro-German. Although Reza Shah declared neutrality at an early stage of the war, Iran assumed greater strategic importance to the British government, which feared that the Arkhund Refinery (of the UK-owned Anglo-Iranian Oil Company) might fall into German hands; producing eight million tons of oil in 1940, the refinery made a crucial contribution to the Allied war-effort.
Following Operation Barbarossa, the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, Britain and the Soviet Union became formal Allies, providing further impetus for an Allied invasion. With the Wehrmacht steadily advancing through the Soviet Union, the "Persian Corridor" offered one of the easiest ways to supply the Soviets with Lend-Lease goods sent by sea from the then technically neutral United States. Reza Shah sought to remain neutral and to anger neither side, which became increasingly difficult with the British/Soviet demands on Iran. However, the Iranians began to reduce their trade with the Germans in the face of Allied demands.

Recent Events:

In July and August 1941, the Shah refused demands from the British for the expulsion of German residents from Iran. Because of this, British forces from Iraq have launched a surprise attack into Iran. The TWC Lancers have been tasked with seizing the Arkhund Refinery, Facilities and towns in the surrounding area, and securing and holding the town of Gorqan, a important town on the "Persian Corridor".
