Conflict Overview:
In 1969 what is known as "the battle of the Bogside" kicked off the troubles in Northen Ireland. With the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) unable to control the violence Northen Irish PM Chichester-Clark requested British troops to assist the RUC in restoring order. The Army was initially welcomed by both sides as a neutral force, but since the raids on Falls Road the army's reputation has been slowly eroded. In response to increased Paramilitary activity 1971 marked the start of Operation Demetrius which were a series of raids on paramilitary weapons caches followed by internment of suspected paramilitaries. During this operation the 1st Parachute Regiment became infamous for Killing 9 civilians.

Recent Events:
By January 1972 tensions between the army and the catholic nationalists are at an all time high . Though welcomed as a neutral force in 1969 the "Honeymoon period" is over. Since Launching Operation Demetrius in 1971 Increasingly the army has been lumped in with the Royal Ulster Constabulary with accusations of anti-Catholic bias rife. In response to Operation Demetrius and the resulting anti-internment march organised by the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association turned violent as Soldiers from the 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment opened fire on the crowd  resulting in civillian deaths around the Bogside park area.
